Jerry Long, R-Streator, is operating without support from the larger Republican Party during this year’s campaign.
The GOP ended support for the candidate after a harassment complaint was investigated by the party, which then asked him to resign from his current position as state representative of the 76th District, which takes in La Salle, Bureau, Putnam and Livingston counties, including Ottawa and Streator.
He’s currently running against Democratic challenger Lance Yednock, of Ottawa.
But he doesn’t view himself necessarily as either Republican or Democrat. Instead, he believes he fits into the bipartisan role of an economist looking out for the state’s future interests.
Long spoke with editors at The Times on Monday in Ottawa.
